SES Students Win Writing Contest

Two Shepherdstown Elementary students are among the regional winners of the “When I Grow Up” essay contest: second grader Clara Lo and fifth grader Nicholas Oyerly. They were honored in Charleston, and received $500 for their SMART529 College savings accounts.  An additional $500 was given each school the winners attend.

Clara Lo

“When I grow up I want to be an artist because I like making creations.  Sometimes I see something in the junk drawer and start creating a whole project.   My neighbor teaches art at Shepherd University and she says it is important to go college because you can learn what other artists around the world do and how you can sell your pieces at art shows and art auctions to make a living.  Art is my favorite subject at school.  Mr. Hunt, my teacher, sometimes uses my work as an example for the other class.  That makes me feel proud.”

Nicholas Oyerly

“When I grow up I want to be a monkey because then I will know that my invention worked! I want to be an extremely smart scientist who will create a machine that could transform you into anything. You could turn into something as small as a speck of dust or as big as Godzilla. Going to college will help me learn science in order to build this machine and other machines. I’d better stop writing. I have to get working on my inventions!”

Earth Day

Josie Lo
Earth Day is a wonderful day. Here are five ways to help our natural resources and our Earth:

1.Pick up some trash in a local park.
2.Recycle everything you can.
3 Don’t litter!
4.Compost produce youdon’t use.
5. Walk or take the bus places!

A Monster In my Closet

By Lucia Valentine
A monster in my closet- what ever shall I do?
A monster in my closet- I think it is black and blue!
I turned on my light, screamed and screamed, ran down to my mom’s room.
She simply thought I was crazy
and I stayed in her bed because I was lazy.
She checked my closert through and through.
Then tucked me in.
I dreamt I was in Kalamazoo.
I saw a monster in my closet
But now it’s gone.  Do you think I’ve lost it?
