1. WVU Blows Shot at National Title

Pittsburgh 13–WVU 9 . The Mountaineers were sitting pretty at No. 2 in the nation, and all they had to do was get a win over a struggling Pitt team to play for a national championship. WVU lost because of turnovers and failed to win the battle at the line of scrimmage. Pitt freshman running back LeSean McCoy rushed 38 times for 148 yards. Losing at the No. 2 spot in the Bowl Championship Series has been the theme all year in college football. So instead of playing for the national title, the Mountaineers will face Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

2. Shepherd Falls To Cal, 58–38

The Rams fell short of their goal to win out in the playoffs. Even an early lead from an 87-yard kick return from Dervon Wallace to open the game. This game was a shootout, but ultimately California Pa., offense was too much for the Rams defense. Wallace was held to a season low 51 yards rushing on 21 carries, but he did have 56 yards receiving on five catches and 124 kickoff return yards on four attempts.

3. Cougar's Auxer sets record again

Joselyn Auxer, 16, broke another swim record for Jefferson County High School, wwimming against Clarke County, Va. Auxer set a new record for the 200-yard individual medley relay with a time of 2:36.46, beating the old record by five seconds. At the same meet, the Cougars 400-yard freestyle team (Martha Michelson, Joselyn Auxer, Michelle Litwin and Tiffany Hamilton) broke the school record for that event by two seconds.

4. Wallace Harlon Hill Finalist

Shepherd University running back Dervon Wallace was named a Harlon Hill Finalist, which is the equvalent to the Heisman Trophy in Division 2.At Shepherd’s spring game Dervon told The Observer he would rush for over 2,000 yards this season, and he backed up his promise by rushing for 2,138 yards, which broke the WVIAC single-season rushing record. 

5. Shepherd Men Win Four in Row

Shepherd Rams Basketball has gotten off to a great start. They have won four in a row and are 1–0 in conference play. The Rams have played good defense, defeating Seaton Hill, Shippensburg, and Pfeiffer convincinly. Rams Head coach Ken Tyler says, “We have found a formula that works for us, playing good defense and crashing the boards. Even though we’ve had some struggles offensively, we’re playing such good defense that we’ve been able to overcome those struggles.” The Rams Are 4-1 (1-0)

6. WVU Pat White Player of the Year

 Quarterback Patrick White becomes the first player since Ken Dorsey in 2002 to win Big East offensive player-of-the-year award more than once. White accounted for 26 touchdowns overall. He completed 134 of 197 passes for 1,548 yards and 12 touchdowns while throwing only four interceptions. Rushing, White led WVU with 1,185 and 14 rushing touchdowns, averaging 6.7 yards per carry.

7. WVU Mens Basketball Start 6-1

First-year coach Bob Huggins has the Mountaineers off to a 6–1 start. All their victories have come by double digits including their most recent 88–59 victory over Auburn, in which they hit 61 percent of their shots. Alex Ruoff scored a career high 28 points. WVU’s only loss came at the hands of Tennessee.

8. Shepherd Baseball Signs Cleary

The Rams signed Michael Cleary to a letter of intent to pay baseball in 2009. A 6-foot-6, 250 pound first baseman/pitcher, Cleary played at Stafford High School in Virginia, where he won the MVP as a freshmen and sophomore. He led Stafford in batting average, hits, extra base hits, and home runs both seasons.

9. Shepherd Volleyball Signs Two

Women’s volleyball Head Coach Sarah Smith announced signing two new players to letters of intent for 2008: Lauren Jeschelnik and Amanda Hall. Hall is a 5-foot-11 middle blocker and a member of four district and regional champion teams and one state championship squad. Jeschelnik is 6-foot setter who lettered in volleyball, basketball and softball.

10. Nats Get Milledge

The Washington Nationals traded catcher Brian Snyder and outfielder Ryan Church to the New York Mets for outfielder Lastings Milledge. In a conference call with Nationals GM Jim Bowden and Manager Manny Acta, Milledge said, “I’m very excited to be a part of this organization. I know Manny wants me to play everyday, and that will give me the chance to show what I can do.”
